Stanislav Jiroš
Stanislav Jiroš – black jewellery maker

Biography

Glass has been part of Stanislav Jiroš’s life since his youth. After primary school he went to the Secondary School of Applied Arts for Glass (SUPŠS) in Železný Brod, graduating in 1965 in lampwork glass – the making of glass figurines. He then worked for the foreign trade enterprise Jablonex as a sample maker of Christmas decorations and artificial flowers, and did his military service from 1966 to 1968.

After a short time at the Jablonecká bižuterie – Christmas decorations company, he moved to the Museum of Glass and Jewellery, where he spent ten years as a sample maker in the art studio. It was there that he came to know the history and technique of black jewellery.

From 1979 he worked at the glass composition works in Jablonec – first as a glassmaker, then as a technologist and finally as works foreman. The works mainly produced glass rods for lampwork figurines, as well as raw material for leading glass artists, among them Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, František Vízner, Aleš Vašíček and many others.

In the early 1990s he managed to obtain original glass components for making black jewellery. Since 1996 he has devoted himself to it fully – it is his sole occupation and, at the same time, one of his hobbies. He has taken his jewellery to sales and promotional events such as Skleněné městečko (Glass Town) in Železný Brod, the craft fairs in Turnov and a glass festival in Poland.

In 2025 the Governor of the Liberec Region awarded him the title Master of Traditional Handicraft of the Liberec Region for traditional black jewellery making.

He is now beginning to pass his experience on to his grandson, so that the tradition of this historic craft can continue. He has been married since 1969 and has two daughters.
